What: bitcoind is a multithreaded C++ program that implements the Bitcoin protocol.
Why: As part of Bitcoin Core installation, bitcoind has been bundled with the original client from version 0.2.6 to 0.4.9, and with Bitcoin-Qt since 0.5.0. It is available across Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems (32 or 64-bit).
